Serena Guthrie feeling “very privileged” after being voted as Channel Island Sports Personality of the Year

Team Bath Netball co-captain Serena Guthrie capped the annual sporting award season in style by being named as 2018 Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year.

The Blue & Gold star, who is from Jersey, took the award ahead of bowls players Lucy Beere and Alison Merrien, rugby player Michael Le Bourgeois and boxer Bradley Watson in the public vote.

“All of the athletes and competitors up for tonight are fantastic in their own right, this was an incredibly tough field, so I’m very happy to get the public vote and feel very privileged,” said Guthrie.

“Obviously 2018 was definitely the best year of my career but we’ve got another big year ahead and this is a pretty awesome way to start it.”

Proud mum Heather Guthrie collected the award on behalf of her daughter, whose success came after she played a key role as England Netball won their first-ever Commonwealth title at the Gold Coast 2018 Games.

That historic triumph earned the Vitality Roses two prizes at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards – Team of the Year and Sporting Moment of the Year.

Guthrie will be back on court in the Blue & Gold on Saturday, February 9 when they visit a Loughborough Lightning side now coached by former Team Bath player Sara Bayman.

The next Team Bath home game is against reigning Superleague champions Wasps Netball on Friday, February 22. Click here for the full 2019 fixture list and to purchase tickets.

A new date for the Superleague derby against Severn Stars, which was postponed on Friday due to the wintry weather conditions, will be confirmed as soon as possible.
