Phumza Maweni and former Team Bath netballers set for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as South Africa and Scotland name squads

Team Bath Netball goal-keeper Phumza Maweni has been named in the South Africa squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

She is joined in the SPAR Proteas squad by former Blue & Gold stars Khanyisa Chawane, Lenize Potgieter and Zanele Vimbela.

Maweni excelled for Team Bath during the 2022 season, forging an outstanding defensive partnership with England’s Layla Guscoth, and was voted into the Vitality Superleague All-Star VII by her fellow netballers. She was also named as Coaches’ Player of the Year at Team Bath’s end-of-season awards dinner.

Birmingham will be Maweni’s second Commonwealth Games after she, Vimbela – who was a Team Bath player at the time – and Potgieter all helped South Africa to a fifth-placed finish at Gold Coast 2018.

Meanwhile, Claire Maxwell (nee Brownie) has been named as captain of the Scotland squad for the Commonwealth Games. Maxwell is a former Team Bath player, as are Thistles coaches Tamsin Greenway and Sara Francis-Bayman.

Fi Toner, who played for Team Bath during the curtailed 2020 Superleague season, will compete at her third Commonwealth Games after being named in the Northern Ireland squad.
