Third Blue and Gold Coast star as Chelsea Lewis is named in Wales squad for 2018 Commonwealth Games

Chelsea Lewis has become the third Team Bath Netball player to be selected for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games after her place in the Wales squad was confirmed on Thursday.

The prolific goal-shooter, who can also play goal-attack, has vast international experience having played at two Netball World Cups, in 2011 and 2015, and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“I am so honoured to be selected to represent Wales at Gold Coast 2018,” said the 24-year-old. “There has been a lot of sweat and tears along the way but I could not be prouder to be heading to my second Games. A massive thank you to my family and my netball family who have helped me along the way.”

Lewis is joined in the Gold Coast 2018 squad by former Blue and Gold players Kyra Jones and Amanda Varey, a University of Bath Pharmacy graduate and postgraduate.

She tweeted: “Many thanks to Team Bath and the University of Bath – I will never take for granted the world-class facilities I’ve trained at for 13 years since starting my undergraduate course that have no doubt been a massive factor in me being able to compete at this level.”

Team Bath Netball captain Eboni Beckford-Chambers and attacker Kadeen Corbin were last month named in the England squad for the Commonwealth Games, which are taking place from April 4-25.

Lewis’s selection means that 26 sportspeople based at the University of Bath will now be competing on the Gold Coast across a range of sports – click here for more information.

A number of University graduates have also been selected, the latest being Eloise Laity – a Thompson Education Trust scholar who studied Chemistry and has been named in the Welsh women’s hockey squad for a second successive Commonwealth Games.
