Meet the players – 2022

Imogen Allison

• Imogen has established herself as one of netball’s most outstanding young prospects since joining Team Bath in September 2016 and has represented England on their past two tours of New Zealand, making her senior Roses debut in 2020 and helping them to a historic series victory in 2021. She is part of England’s Vitality Roses programme once again for the 2021-22 season having previously been a member of the England Futures squad while combining netball with studying Sports & Exercise Science at the University of Bath, graduating in the summer of 2020. Imogen, who helped England U21s win bronze at the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana, was shortlisted for the 2019 Superleague Young Player of the Year award and voted as both Coaches' and Fans' Player of the Year for Team Bath in 2021. She is Team Bath's captain for the 2022 Superleague season having led the Blue & Gold to victory at the 2021 British Fast5 All-Stars Championship.

Kim Borger

• Australian shooter Kim has quickly established herself as a Blue & Gold favourite and was named as players’, coaches’ and fans’ Player of the Year following an outstanding debut season in 2019 before captaining Team Bath during the curtailed 2020 campaign. She was also one of three captains during the 2021 season, leading Team Bath out in their first Grand Final since 2013. One of the Superleague's most clinical finishers, converting 93% of her shots in 2021, Kim has brought plenty of experience to the Team Bath attack having played for NSW Swifts in the ANZ Championships and Melbourne Vixens in Suncorp Super Netball. She also won the 2009 World Youth Championships title with Australia U21 and was named as Most Valuable Player in the Victorian Netball League during 2018.

Lily-May Catling

• Versatile defender Lily-May will return to the club where she played for the U19s and Academy after joining Team Bath for the 2022 season. She grew up in Wimborne Minster in Dorset before moving to Australia at the age of 19 after what started as a backpacking adventure turned into a permanent stay. After playing netball in her new country, most recently for USC Thunder on the Sunshine Coast, Lily-May made her Superleague debut in 2021 with Wasps before making the switch to the Blue & Gold.

Betsy Creak

• Betsy is back for a third season in Blue & Gold having made her Superleague debut during the curtailed 2020 campaign and made a big impact during 2021, earning the Most Improved Player accolade at Team Bath's end-of-season awards. The talented shooter has enjoyed a rapid rise since catching the eye with some impressive performances for Wales during their summer series of internationals in 2019. She has been named in the Wales squad for the 2021-22 season as they look to qualify for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Netball World Cup. She had played student netball for the University of Bristol and for Premier Romans in National League Premier 1 before deciding to trial – successfully – for Wales. A former track and field athlete, Betsy taught Biology at Badminton School near Bristol.

Sophie Drakeford-Lewis

• Sophie is regarded as one of the game’s most exciting young attacking talents and now has 11 senior England caps after impressing once again for the Roses during their historic Autumn 2021 tour of New Zealand. She also helped the Roses to a series victory over Jamaica and finish runners-up in the 2022 Quad Series. She is in her fifth season with the Blue & Gold and was named as the Superleague’s Young Player of the Year in 2019. She had previously been shortlisted for the honour after a brilliant debut season in 2017 while playing for Mavericks. A junior International tennis player, Sophie is concentrating fully on netball this year after graduating in Integrated Mechanical & Electrical Engineering from the University of Bath, where she was supported by a Bill Whiteley Sports Scholarship.

Layla Guscoth

• England defender Layla is back for a second spell in Blue & Gold having previously starred for Team Bath during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, being named in the Superleague team of the year both times. Her performances were all the more impressive as she was combining netball with a demanding off-court career as a trainee doctor. After completing her two-year Foundation postgraduate medical training programme, Layla took the opportunity to play professionally in Australia for Adelaide Thunderbirds in Suncorp Super Netball before returning to Bath for the 2021 season. Layla, a Superleague champion with Mavericks in 2011 and Superleague Player of the Year in 2014, has 29 caps for England and was part of the Roses squad that won bronze at the 2019 Netball World Cup. Away from the court, Layla – who studied Medicine at Oxford University – is a Doctor at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath and was named among the Daily Telegraph’s Sportswomen of the Year in 2020 for her work with the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Serena Guthrie

• One of the world’s great mid-court players, Serena announced her retirement from netball in March 2022 as she is expecting her first child. She is still very much involved with the squad, though, sharing her incredible knowledge in training and on match-day. Her prodigious talent first earned Serena a place in the Team Bath Superleague squad in 2006-07 when she was still studying for her A-levels. She won the title in her first season and went on to claim three more crowns during the next eight years before heading a successful four-year spell playing professionally in New Zealand and Australia, with Northern Mystics and Sydney-based Giants Netball respectively. On the international stage, Serena - who returned to Team Bath in 2019 - had played for England at U17, U19, U21 and senior level by the age of 17 and won her 100th cap for the Roses during the Autumn 2020 tour of New Zealand before captaining them to a historic series victory over the Silver Ferns 12 months later. After helping them claim bronze at both the 2011 and 2015 World Netball Championships, a feat she repeated in 2019 in Liverpool, Serena was a driving force behind England’s famous Commonwealth Games triumph in 2018. She took a break from netball in 2020 before returning to help Team Bath reach the 2021 Superleague Grand Final, which proved to her final competitive match in Blue & Gold. Her last game was in January 2022 as she captained England against Australia in the 2022 Quad Series final. Serena is an inductee into the University of Bath Hall of Fame for Sport.

Kirsty Harris

• Wing-attack Kirsty made her Superleague debut in 2021 after progressing through the Team Bath Netball youth ranks and is named in the squad again for the 2022 season. She first joined Team Bath’s prolific Academy pathway programme in 2015 and has worn their famous colours at U17, U19 and U21 level, as well as represent the University of Bath in BUCS [British Universities & Colleges Sport] competition while studying Sports Performance. She was also a training associate with the Superleague squad during the 2020 season. After graduating from university in the summer of 2020, Kirsty is an assistant PE teacher at St Helen & St Katharine School in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and was assistant coach of Team Bath's U17s at the 2021 School Games.

Molly Hole

• As one of the most exciting prospects in English Netball, Molly has risen through the Team Bath ranks to make her first appearance in the Superleague squad. Molly, who can play goal-keeper and goal-shooter, began with the Team Bath Netball regional hub in Dorset five years ago and then joined the Wiltshire Academy Development Centre in Salisbury when it was set up in 2020. She made her senior Blue & Gold debut as part of the squad that won gold at the 2021 British Fast5 All-Stars Championships. Molly has also been part of the England Roses Academy since 2018 and captained the U21s to victory at the 2021 Netball Europe competition, an honour she had previously enjoyed with the U17s in 2020.

Lily Jones

• After excelling as the captain of Team Bath’s U19s last season, the 18-year-old from Jersey is the one of two Academy graduates to be promoted to the 2022 Superleague squad. Lily caught the eye in a number of training matches, which helped the 2021 Superleague team prepare during a Covid-effected pre-season, and gained more top-level development time as part of the England Roses Academy long squad. She made her senior Blue & Gold as part of the squad that won 2021 British Fast5 All-Stars Championship gold.

Phumza Maweni

• South Africa international Phumza joins Team Bath's formidable defensive unit following a hugely-successful three-year spell with Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia's Suncorp Super Netball, where she played every match. Prior to that, the rangy and athletic goal-keeper had enjoyed stints in the Superleague with Loughborough Lightning (2015) and Severn Stars (2018). She is also a regular starter for the SPAR Proteas, playing for them at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and was named as defender of the tournament when she helped her country to victory at the 2021 Africa Netball Cup.

Hannah Passmore

• Shooting star Hannah was the first player born in the current millennium to be selected for the Team Bath Superleague squad and is now in her fourth season of top-flight netball. She made her league debut during the 2021 campaign and also represented England U21s later that summer. The former Millfield School student has been part of the Blue & Gold’s talent development pathway for a number of years and is also an integral part of the club’s U21 squad, which she co-captained during the 2019-20 season. Hannah is in the second year of a Criminology degree course at the University of Bath, where she is supported by a Buchan Jones Sporting Scholarship.

Tash Pavelin

• Versatile defender Tash is back for a fourth season in the Team Bath Superleague squad, having made her debut in 2018 and produced breakthrough performances during the curtailed 2020 season which she built on with more eye-catching displays in 2021. She spent 2019 on work placement with pharmaceutical giants Pfizer, during which time she trained with Saracens Mavericks and represented their U21s in NPL competition having captained Team Bath at that level in 2017. Tash, who has represented England at the U17 and U21 Netball Europe events, graduated from the University of Bath with a Natural Sciences degree in the summer of 2020 and now works full-time at an accountancy firm in Bath.

Jess Shaw

• England Futures player Jess is back for a second spell in Blue & Gold having previously worn the famous colours during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The talented attacking mid-courter had previously played for former franchise Yorkshire Jets before spending 2019 and 2020 gaining more top-flight experience with Loughborough Lightning. Jess, younger sister of fellow Team Bath player Rachel, was one of the first players to be selected for the full-time England Netball world-class training programme when it launched in the summer of 2016 and helped England U21 win bronze at the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana.

Rachel Shaw

• Rachel has firmly established herself as one of Team Bath’s key attacking talents and is lining up for her ninth season in Blue & Gold in 2021. Having made her Superleague debut aged just 16 with previous club Yorkshire Jets, her initial career at Team Bath was hampered by injury but she has put those problems well behind her and was voted as Player of the Season by her team-mates in 2017. She has also represented England at U17, U19, U21 and senior level. A former netball coach at the Royal High School for Girls in Bath, Rachel was part of the Team Bath coaching set-up with primary responsibility for the University of Bath student squad in the national BUCS [British Universities & Colleges Sport] competition from 2018 to 2022. Since February 2022, she is an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach with Team Bath Tennis.
