PICTURE GALLERY: Record crowds enjoy Rio-themed Family Fun Day

Nearly 2,000 people of all ages got into the Rio spirit on Saturday when they enjoyed a wide range of sports and activities during an Olympic-themed Family Fun Day at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.

Free have-a-go sessions in athletics, badminton, fencing, martial arts, tennis and trampolining proved to be massively popular, as did the chance to experience life as a performance athlete through health and speed testing.

Children collected stars as they enthusiastically tried out the various sports and challenges during an ‘Olympic journey’, which culminated in them being presented with medals on the podium.

They also flocked to the outdoor inflatables and climbing wall, while families enjoyed a barbecue and the Team Bath Beach.

The centrepiece was the annual Olympic Day Run over 5m and 3km, which was officially started by London 2012 Olympic rhythmic gymnast Rachel Smith and featured hundreds of runners.

The day – attended by a record crowd – represented an opportunity for parents to introduce their youngsters to sports not offered at school and whole generations got the chance to try out the inspiring facilities used by some of the country’s top sportspeople as they prepare for Rio 2016.
