Join us for free family fun at Team Bath Community Activity Day

Racing an Olympic swimmer in the London 2012 Legacy Pool, having a go at bobsleigh and taking on a modern pentathlon challenge are just some of the exciting activities awaiting visitors to this year’s Team Bath Community Activity Day.

Taking place at the Sports Training Village from 12-4pm on Saturday, June 20, the annual event provides an opportunity to try out some of the best sports facilities in the country for free.

There will be fun for all the family, including have-a-go sessions in athletics, badminton, football, hockey, netball, rugby, tennis and trampolining.

The modern pentathlon challenge – featuring swimming, running, fencing, riding and water-pistol shooting – will get visitors in the mood for the European Championships, being staged at the University of Bath from August 18-23.

And visitors will also be able to take the plunge in the university’s newly-refurbished swimming pool and race against London 2012 Olympian Stacey Tadd, now the Programmes Coordinator for Team Bath Tribe.

The university’s push-start bobsleigh and skeleton track, the only one of its kind in Britain, has also been upgraded to feature a sophisticated new braking mechanism.

And visitors to the Community Activity Day can be among the first to try it out, with supervised bobsleigh sessions for people aged 18 and over taking place at 1.30pm, 2pm and 2.30pm.

Outdoor activities will include a rock-climbing wall, zip-wire and inflatables.

And the annual Olympic Day Run – celebrating the ideals of the Olympic Movement – will once again take place over a 5km course, with a 3km run available for under-16s.

London 2012 swimmer Siobhan-Marie O’Connor – who trains with the British Swimming National Centre at the University – will act as official starter for the run, which will start at 2pm. Entrants can sign up on the day.

Team Bath’s expert physiotherapists, nutritionists and sport scientists will be on hand throughout the day to provide guidance, advice and support for sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

And it is not only sport which is being celebrated – visitors will also have chance to participate in dance classes at the University of Bath’s new arts complex, The Edge.

Dancer and choreographer Hannily Bendell will lead 30-minute ballet fitness sessions from 1.30pm and 2.30pm, while dance artist Lisa May Thomas will stage Moving With All The Family classes at 2pm and 3pm.

Stephen Baddeley, Director of Sport at the University of Bath, said: “Our Community Activity Day always proves extremely popular and this year’s is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet.

“We are proud of the world-class facilities at the Sports Training Village, which is not only home to some of the country’s top athletes but is also fully open to the public.

People of all ages had fun at the 2014 Team Bath Community Activity Day“A number of the facilities have been renovated and refurbished within the past 12 months, not least our Olympic-sized pool which has received excellent feedback from elite swimmers and the public.

“This event will provide a great chance to see what we have to offer and there will be plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, so come along and enjoy a great day out.”
