Shipperley set for hockey medal

University of Bath Sports Performance graduate Zoe Shipperley is guaranteed at least a silver medal with the England hockey team at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games after they beat New Zealand in a tense semi-final this afternoon (Friday).

The game was all-square at 1-1 after the Kiwis scored a last-gasp equaliser, but England went through 3-1 in the penalty shoot.

That means England now face Australia in the final at 8.15pm tomorrow (Saturday).

Fellow Sports Performance graduate Lewis Prosser scored for Wales as they beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in the 9th/10th play-off.

The Scottish women’s hockey team, featuring University Management with Marketing graduate Alieen Davis, lost their fifth/sixth play-off to India 2-1.

University of Bath Coach Education and Sports Development graduate Heather Olver is through to tomorrow’s badminton mixed doubles semi-finals.

Olver and partner Chris Langridge beat Canada’s Toby Ng and Alex Bruce 21-16 21-17 in the quarter-finals today to progress. They face Malaysia’s Peng Soon Chan and Lai Pei Jing in the semis.

We hung in there

She said: “It was a little bit edgy. I think we both felt that if we played our best we could win, it was obviously just trying to bring that game out there.

“We struggled a little bit but credit to the Canadians, they stuck with it and really came back at us, especially in the second game and really put us on edge and made us more nervous. Luckily, we hung in there and got it together.”

At Hampden Park, Andy Robertson ran the last leg for England’s 4x100m quartet as they won the third semi-final to qualify for tomorrow’s final. Emily Diamond helped the women’s 4x400m relay quartet win their semi to progress to the final tomorrow.

In netball, Wales, featuring Team Bath’s Billy Pritchard, lost their seventh/eighth place play-off game 58-36 to Northern Ireland.
