Terrific comeback secures point at Storm

A last-gasp Pamela Cookey goal completed a remarkable comeback for Team Bath as they drew 48-all at Surrey Storm in the ZEO Superleague last night (Monday).

The England captain converted on the final whistle following a turnover by Team Bath skipper Serena Guthrie.

That effort completed an impressive comeback after Team Bath had trailed by 12 goals earlier in the game and had gone into the final quarter seven down at 41-34.

The two teams were closely matched early on, before Storm started to build what looked like a decisive lead towards the end of quarter two.

But Team Bath showed why they are the most successful team in the Superleague history by taking quarter three and then producing a storming last quarter to tie the game.

Jess Thirlby, Team Bath head coach, said: “We played better early on but we made some unforced errors which put us on the back foot.

“In the context of being 12 down and going into the final quarter seven down, we were really pleased with the response of the team,” she added.  “There was a really encouraging team spirit in the last quarter, particularly as we were away from home.

“It was disappointing that we put ourselves in the position where we had to chase the game,” added Thirlby. “We need to make sure we eliminate the individual errors if we’re going to contest and win games against the best teams.”

Team Bath return to action on Saturday (15 February) with another tricky trip to Hertfordshire Mavericks. Their next home game is against Celtic Dragons in a repeat of last year’s final. That takes place at the University of Bath Sports Training Village on Friday 28 February.
