Team Bath hoping for home semi-final

Team Bath’s netballers will probably have to wait until Monday’s (13 May) last game of their Superleague Showdown league campaign to learn their semi-final opponents.

The four-times Superleague champions currently top the Showdown table. If they finish the season in first or second place they will have a home semi-final at the Sports Training Village on the weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May.

But mathematically, any two of Team Bath, Surrey Storm or Celtic Dragons could still finish in the top-two places.

Team Bath go into the Surrey Storm game off the back of a 60-39 away win at Hertfordshire Mavericks on Friday night, while Storm, currently second in the Showdown, have achieved back to back wins.

Jess Thirlby, Team Bath head coach, said she was pleased with the way her team responded following their 66-58 home defeat by Dragons on 29 April.

“We made far too many unforced errors against Celtic Dragons, but we showed a lot of spirit against Mavericks and made a really good start to the game,” said Thirlby.

“We were a lot more clinical, with some really creative attacking play and defensively we were winning the ball early and we were able to capitalise on that.

“We’re still making too many passing errors though and we need to eliminate them in the final games,” she added. “Everyone in the top-four has been struggling with consistency and we need to be a bit more ruthless in our final matches.”

Team Bath netball fans can keep their eyes on the Team Bath website at www.teambath.com for details of semi-final fixtures. The team finishing top of the Showdown table plays a home game against the winner of the fourth/fifth place play-off at 7.30pm on Sunday 19 May.

The team finishing second hosts the third placed team in the other semi-final at 7.30pm on Saturday 18 May.

Quarter scores v Mavericks (Mavericks first):

Q1: 9-18, Q2: 10-8 (19-26), Q3: 9-18 (28-44), Q4: 11-16 (39-60).
