Students’ Union Weekly Sports Update 2

Sports people of Bath

It’s been a busy week for sport; we had the London 2012 medallist celebration last Wednesday 10 October, alongside the first round of BUCS fixtures and this weeks round of fixtures also.

2012 Olympic & Paralymic athletes with Chris Clements & Stephen BaddeleyAfter one full set of results we currently sit in seventh place in the BUCS league table (although I wouldn’t read into this too much given it’s only the end of week two). Having said that, we do currently sit above Loughborough who are in ninth place. A point I shall be reiterating throughout the week.

So all in all a good first round of results last week. Special mention goes to the Rugby Men’s 1st XV who demolished the Cardiff Met first team 54-4, scoring seven tries in the process.

Staying with Rugby, the Rugby League Men’s First Team got their inaugural season in the top division off to a flier, also beating Cardiff Met 34-32 to provisionally move top of the table.

This week also saw Badminton pick up where they left off last year (unbeaten against over Universities) with the Men’s and Women’s second teams both beating Exeter and Swansea first teams respectively 7-1. The Men’s third team drew 4-4 with Plymouth Men’s third team and the Women’s thirds beat Glamorgan firsts 6-2. So a good start to the year for them as well!

However, the stand out result from today (so far) goes to the Basketball Men’s second team who beat UWE 77-49, led by Fresher Will Allen who got 14 points in the game.

Student Union SportThese emails aren’t all about BUCS though, oh no. The Mountaineering Club ran a very successful first Freshers’ trip to North Wales while Interhalls football has also taken off in a big way this semester.

Special shaming mention goes to SU President Chris Clements. Norwood and Woodland Court were leading the game 4-3 upon his arrival and went on to lose 7-4. He attributes this loss however to the fact that he is a) not a footballer and b) has limited knee function.

If you want a special mention in these emails than do let me know, as I can only write about the things I hear about.

In the mean time, hope you’re all settling into the swing of term and continue to contribute to the sporting successes we’re bound to witness this year.

Speaking of sporting successes, here are the highlights from last years London 2012 medal celebration courtesy of CTV.

Event coming up

Monday 22 October: Monday sees the commencement of the Union’s focus week on the National Demonstration and Housing Restrictions in Bath. Keep your eyes out for campaigns going on around campus.

Something which is also ongoing is our Skills Training service within the Union.

If you would like to learn a new skill then Students’ Union skills training is currently offering free membership to students  (it usually costs £10). To find out more go here; bathstudent.com/skills-training.

Many thanks
